Evan is One! | The Shirley Family | Dayton Family Photography

This family is Shirley no stranger to this blog.. 😉 I’ve photographed Amy and Mark from the beginning and each of these adorable boys since they were born! They are just the cutest and i can hardly believe they are 1 and 2 years old now!! Time really does just need to slow down a little bit. Evan and Johnny… their smiles just melt my dang heart. But in typical toddler fashion, they had us running all over the place. Johnny is so fast, when he took off, he was gone in a matter of seconds. I don’t know how Mark and Ames keep up with these two little speed demons!
i just love how amy always coordinates the family so perfectly! and can we talk about how mark is looking at his gorgeous wife. he loves her. <3this image of them ‘hugging’ just cracks me up. running away from mom and dad is just hilarious! a little cuddle break.. and then it was back to exploring.

mark and amy, you know i absolutely adore you both and your super cute little munchkins. thank you as always for trusting me with capturing images of your beautiful family. big love! xxJBZ

I was so excited to do their engagement photography and finally meet darius. and guys, he loooooovvvvvvvves her. watching them together kinda made me melt. how he looks at her is how every man should look at his woman. so stinking sweet. had the sun not gone down and left us in the dark, i could’ve photographed them all night. i have so many favorites from this session because it was just so full of love and lets be honest, they’re super attractive, lol. but i think this one wins it for me. look at her little content smile. oh, i just love it.gina! YOU. ARE. STUNNING! you’re gonna be the most beautiful bride!

gina and darius, i had so much fun with you guys and cannot wait for your wedding! i know its gonna be beautiful and i just can’t wait to see you tie the knot! xxJBZ

gina | hometown: hicksville, ohio | home now: columbus, oh | emergency room nurse | 5 words (as described by darius): strong, confident, trustworthy, stunning, pure

darius | hometown: richmond dale, ohio | home now: jackson, oh | orthopedic sales rep | 5 words (as described by gina): encouraging, calm, thoughtful, loyal, compassionate

the proposal: we were in the Bahamas with his sister and her husband.  we were watching the sunset the first night alone together and I looked over as he went down on one knee and started with my full name, and then I cried!

most looking forward to at the wedding:

gina: knowing that even if all the little things don’t work out the way we plan, I leave Mrs. Darius Scott

darius: That smile of hers. When I get to see her in her dress for the first time and just be overwhelmed with happiness knowing that I get to spend the rest of my days with this woman.

It’ll finally kick in that this is real, not a dream.

wedding planning stresses: the little details, but everything is pretty much ready to go!

wedding planning advice for future brides and grooms:

gina: pick one or two things you want to go big on and keep everything else simple

darius: Pay attention and provide input when necessary. Even though in reality we men don’t really care about the details (we just want to be with you), it is nice to have an ear for what’s going on.

Every once in a while your bride might throw you a curveball and ask you for your opinion on some kind of detail, so you have to be prepared! Besides that, stay out of her way and try to make it as painless as possible for her.

Dayton, OH

jess+joey | together  05.05.11 | engaged 07.15.12 | wedding 05.17.14

how they met, as told by jess:

We were both working at Urban Active Fitness in Beavercreek at the Greene; Joey as a personal trainer and myself as the customer service manager for the gym.
I was standing in the sales office and caught Joey pointing at me from the weight floor with one of his clients.  As soon as he saw that I caught him, he immediately turned away with embarrassment.
I had never spoken to him before so when he was done with his session with that client I went down and asked him why he was pointing at me.
He said that his client had asked him who he thought was the most beautiful girl in the gym. : )

jess | hometown: centerville, oh | Licensed Esthetician and Store Manager of Francesca’s | 5 words (as described by joey): happy, selfless, gorgeous, contagious, caring

joey | hometown: beavercreek, ohio | Project designer for Improve It Home Remodeling | 5 words (as described by jess): Funny, Smart, Romantic, Selfless, Driven

the proposal:

We decided to go on our first trip together to Key West.  Joey brought up the idea that it would be fun to get professional pictures done while we were there as well. So we sought out a photographer and had them scheduled for Sunday at Sunset.

When we got to the airport he called her to double check everything but wouldn’t let me near him when he was on the phone with her.  I thought it was strange but didn’t really think anything of it.

The day came for us to get the pictures done and it poured all day long.  Joey was freaking out and I kept trying to calm him down saying we could just change the day and get the pictures done later in the week etc, but he wasn’t satisfied with that.

We got ready anyway in hopes that it would stop raining and as we left the hotel, the sky cleared.  During the pictures, the photographer asked us if we had a pose we wanted to try.  Joey spoke up immediately and stood in front of me holding my hands.

He then proceeded to tell me how much he loved me and couldn’t live without me and then got down on one knee and proposed!

most memorable part of your day:  when we set off the wish lantern together. It was a really cool feeling watching it and being alone with jess but still surrounded by everything.

funniest memory from your wedding day: Michael Coale (Jess’s Dad)  lip syncing with the family. Showed us what we’re getting into!

any advice for future brides and grooms: Communication is everything. Without opening channels of communication, it will put stress on the relationship.

if you could do it all over, would you change anything: no, everything that happened made it what it was

best part about being married (so far!):  freedom from stress and the comfort we feel together

where did you honeymoon: Bucuti and Tara Resort in Aruba!

Missing You Always | 5 years

God saw that you were getting tired,
A cure was not to be.
So He put His arms around you
and whispered, “Come with Me.”
With tearful eyes, we watched you suffer,
And saw you fade away.
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes “the best”.

its hard to believe its been 5 years… sometimes it feel like longer than that, and sometimes it feels like yesterday. 3pm today marks the time we lost the rock of our family, the man who made me who i am today. i preach the life lessons he taught me to people all the time. He was the smartest man i knew. He knew how to fix everything from all of our cars to the plumbing in the house when something went wrong. Its still not quite normal for me to take a car to a mechanic/shop when all i used to do was call up dad and he’d know what to do every time. We’ve somehow managed to make do without you, dad.. tho we all know it definitely hasn’t been easy, and we wish everyday that you were still here.
we all got together yesterday (well, all except for my younger brother, Justin) to just be together and remember dad. we try to do this each year around the 27th which is usually right around memorial day. none of us knew 5 years ago on the 26th that on the afternoon of the 27th it’d be the last time we saw our dad.. this is why i take so many photos, all the time, and why i love to capture memories for other families.. you never ever know when you might lose someone you love.. and looking at all those photos above, yes i tend to cry, but i also laugh and smile.. looking at photos of loved ones is such a great way to recall past memories. I’m grateful i have all the photos that i do of my dad and whole family.. everyone always gives me grief because i always take so many, but, i’ll never be sorry for putting them thru it. lolhard to believe so much as happened since you left, dad.. 3 of your kids are married now. 3 more babies have been added to the family and lots more pups too. your youngest just bought a house! life goes on, i guess.. just wish you could’ve been here for all these milestones..

 09.25.53-05.27.09

Rest in Peace, Dad.. i hope we continue to make you proud as you watch over us. we love and miss you always.

Faye - I wish I had more comforting words to say…want you and your family to know how much I am thinking of them and you. Sending you all hugs today. love you friend.

Mandy - As I sit here crying from this post– Nolan looks over at me and then I smile and smiles and I know Dad has everything to do with that. This is so perfectly written. Great job jenny. We miss you dad. Wish you could’ve met Nick and Nolan and been here for it all.

Bobbi - I love that you took such great photos of him later in life… the first and last one are really special. Your family is just the best. Sending love your way. Big time.

Kara - I love the entire Barnes family! I am thinking of you all during this sad anniversary. Your dad would be very proud of all of you. This was very well written Jenny.

Meggie D - Thinking of you and your family Jenny. Love you big time sister. Xoxoxo

Stephany Nelson - That was beautiful Jenny. He would be so proud of you and the woman you have become! You will always have a special angel looking over you. XOXO

Helen - Sending hugs & love to your fam today. Jenny, you’ve been one of the dearest people in my life. You’re just amazing & continue making your dad proud EVERY day. Love you.

Amy - I am in tears! What an incredible tribute to the most amazing man in your life. Love you to pieces JBZ!

melanie - HUGSSSSS. I wish there was something i could say, but as you know there isn’t. keep your head up and your kick ass angel is totally proud of you and what you’ve become. xoxo

Bryan S - Jenny, what a beautiful tribute. Couldn’t help but get a little teary-eyed myself when reading that.
I get what your saying about the milestones. It’s hard, but I truly believe God helps your dad be apart of these events. Just not in ways we can totally comprehend.

Janine Coale - Jenny, this is such a beautiful tribute to your Dad. So glad you have wonderful memories of him and photos to show your love for each other. You are a beautiful person and your love for people shows in how you interact as well as the joy you capture in your work. I’m sure your Dad is so very proud of you.

Max | 1 year | 05.09.13 | favorite things: music, his pacifier, his tent (from IKEA), daddy, and mommy | 5 words: curious, smiley, active, cuddly, and smart

best macho max moment so far:

Every time he hits a milestone it’s amazing (i.e. crawling) but honestly, we just love to see  him happy.  This is best displayed at his music class when he is jamming out with his friends on guitar or tambourine!

advice for new parents on surviving the first year:

Try not to get frustrated with your spouse – they are doing the best they can as a new parent, just as you are!  When frustrations arise, take a deep breath, smile, and decide if it’s really something to make an issue of.

favorite foods right now:

broccoli, chicken, bananas, and all carbs!

least favorite foods right now:

blueberries and grapes

one baby item you couldnt live without:

swaddle blankets

biggest first year struggle:

At about 10 and half months Max got an ear infection that would NOT go away.  We were at the doctor every week – he got put on a nebulizer (for breathing treatments) and did three rounds of antibiotics.

Finally – he was cleared of it at his one year appointment.  But – the not sleeping, and cranky baby were kind of terrible.

proudest first year moment/accomplishment/etc:
Does surviving the first birthday party count?
Really though – it’s so cool to be able to fully interact with him now.
He is able to understand simple questions and definitely knows who mommy and daddy are!
We are loving all the waving, clapping, and babbling that has recently emerged too 🙂
